France: diversity
Bordeaux (cabernet sauvignon, merlot), Burgundy (pinot noir, chardonnay), the Rhône valley (syrah, grenache), the Loire (chenin, sauvignon, cabernet franc), Alsace (riesling, gewurztraminer), Languedoc… France covers almost every style, from crisp whites to reds for ageing. Ideal if you want a bit of everything.
Italy: hundreds of native grapes
Piedmont's nebbiolo (barolo, barbaresco), Tuscany's sangiovese (chianti, brunello di Montalcino), Veneto (valpolicella, amarone, prosecco), Puglia's primitivo, Sicily's nero d'avola. Often fresh, easy-drinking wines made for the table.
Spain: sunshine and tempranillo
Rioja and Ribera del Duero (tempranillo), Priorat (grenache, carignan), the whites of Galicia (albariño from Rías Baixas) and Rueda (verdejo), cava for bubbles. Generous reds, often oak-aged, and increasingly fresh whites.
Portugal: grapes you won't find anywhere else
The Douro (touriga nacional, and port), vinho verde in the north, young and lively, Alentejo and Dão. Excellent value and original flavours.
Greece: one of Europe's oldest traditions
Santorini's assyrtiko, a sharp, saline white; Naoussa's xinomavro, a structured red sometimes compared to nebbiolo; Nemea's agiorgitiko, a supple red; moschofilero, a fragrant white. A must to discover.
Georgia: the cradle of wine
Wine has been made here for around 8,000 years, and traditional winemaking in qvevri (large clay jars buried in the ground) is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Saperavi gives deep reds; rkatsiteli whites, and "amber" wines when the skins macerate with the juice. For the curious.
